Let me briefly sketch the current legal education in the world over with special reference to our country. One may find a paradigm shift in imparting legal education all over the world. The same is being echoed in our pedagogy too. Legal Education in India has remained mostly concentrated on developing legal professionals in a national context. Legal Education has more or less remained a theoretical study, with only minimal content of practical exposure. In the changed scenario, the additional roles of an advocateenvisaged are that of policy planner, business advisor, negotiator among interest groups, expert in articulation and communication of ideas,mediator, lobbyist, law reformer, etc. These roles demand specialized knowledge and skills which are not ordinarily available in the legal education curriculum and inturn in the existing profession. Further, legal services has hampered due to considerable change in economic, political and societal landscape. To properly relate the expectations from a center of Legal Studies, we need to appreciate the following changes that have happened in the legal environment across the world in the last few decades:
• Courts are tending to promote judicial management of disputes, from litigation. Even clients have started giving more prominence to conflict resolution rather than litigation management. For betterment there is general intention among the people to promote win-win situation.
• Litigation moved to background in the wake of Alternative DisputeResolution Mechanisms.
• Corporate clients started relying on lawyers for problem identification andearly solutions rather than for fighting law suits.
To accept these challenges, law aspirants are to undergo a structured learning process, with practical experience as their major premises. The learning process should commence with class room, move towards simulation learning and move further towards experimental learning. As an affiliated institution to Universities within the given framework, Mount Zion Law College would attempt to fulfill the above requirements of legal education. That is a real challenge to us. With the clear vision on the above challenges infront, the MOUNT ZION LAW COLLEGE (MZLC) KADAMMANITTA was established by Dr.Abraham Kalamanil, in the year 2013 to prepare the young lawyers who can face and work for the society as per new challenges of our progressive society. MZLC follows the teaching methodology through Moot Courts, mock trials, Role Plays, client counseling sessions, drafting lessons and other various legal activities like regular court visits for practical knowledge. MZLC ensures to bridge the gap between the theory and practical application of concepts through a learning process which is simulative, participative and multi-disciplinary. The academic curriculum, pedagogyand teaching methods are designed to enable the young lawyers of futureto think creatively, critically, well conversant with legal principles andpractice. To ensure that our law graduates acquire the best possibleknowledge of law, skills of advocacy and drafting of pleadings, the uniqueinternship programs are designed with NGOs, Judiciary, law firms andorganizations. Ofcourse to fulfil the mentioned obligations we have talented young faculty, well stocked library and state of the art infrastructures. Apart from the above a dedicated management. When we are equipped with all the above, we expect dedication, discipline and commitments from our students and support from their wards.
